Thank you for visiting the Department of Psychiatry website. Psychiatry is one of the larger clinical departments at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University.

With a forward-looking vision and an enthusiastic faculty, the Department of Psychiatry and its partner clinical facilities, are committed to ensuring, in concert with the vision at Western, that our students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, have the optimum learning and training experiences with opportunities to engage in both clinical and basic science research. Dedicated clinical teachers, clinical researchers, physicians, scientists, and basic scientists support these opportunities along with dedicated and knowledgeable administrative support staff.

This is an exciting time for psychiatry at Western. As we plan for new facilities, our current clinical services continue to realign and reorganize in an environment of continuous quality improvement. In collaboration with our affiliated research institutes at Robarts and Lawson Health Research Institute, a wide range of research is being carried out in the neuroimaging of schizophrenia, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and and autism, in the area of proteomics and genomics studies including antipsychotic medication, in health outcomes, suicide-related research, and more. Our CME program is strong and vibrant and we have energetic leadership in postgraduate training in psychiatry and undergraduate medical education. Career training programs in child/adolescent and geriatric psychiatry are comprehensive and well-organized.

Currently, we provide subspecialty training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and are actively seeking accreditation for training programs in Geriatric and Forensic Psychiatry.

Our department is organized around six academic divisions including Neuropsychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Developmental Disabilities and General Adult Psychiatry. Our divisions provide an academic home for the education, training and research in each of these.
